unit 10 h.e application

when going through the UCAS applications we had to think about what universities we wanted to go to and at first i found it hard to pick them but i also had trouble writing my personal statement

personal statements

first draft
I think musical theatre is astonishing being able to sing, dance and act at the same time has always been such a skill and talent to me. I find performing an escape and a way for me to express my feelings, when I was in school I performed in plays and we once performed songs from our favourite musicals and I performed ‘maybe this time’ from cabaret and I found singing the song a great way to relieve stress. I’ve been looking after my younger siblings even since I was ten years old I found this a great way to gain leadership skills as I would have to be assertive yet easy going. I can work well in groups as I think it's very important to gain new and different perspectives and learn new skills within a group.  Musical theatre has always been something I have been interested in but never thought I would be able to pursue because I used to have really bad stage fright but I was able to overcome it by practicing hard and getting into the character helped. I'm still working on my dance and singing skills but I have defiantly progressed in all my skills.

second draft

I think musical theatre is an aspiration of mine being able to sing, dance and act at the same time has always been such a talent to me. Initially performing was an escape and a way for me to express my feelings. However, as I got older I performed in several shows one where I sung ‘Maybe This Time’ from Cabaret, I found singing the song a great way to make myself heard. I’ve been looking after my younger siblings even since I was ten years old I found this a great way to gain leadership and independence skills as I would have to be assertive yet easy going. I can work well in groups and I think it's very important to gain new and different perspectives and learn new skills this way. I have always been interested in musical theatre but never thought I would be able to pursue it because I used to have really bad stage fright. However, over time I was able to overcome this by practicing hard and getting into a character. I'm still working on my dance and singing skills and have been making steady progress.

I have done many after school clubs and activities one of them was doing a summer course at RADA which I found a great way to build my acting skills, I am always trying to find new ways to develop my skills through my training. I am very good at meeting deadlines and managing my time effectively which I think is an important skill. When I first watched the musical ‘Hairspray’ I instantly was intrigued because usually the leads of musicals are petite, so watching hairspray made me realise performers can come in all different sizes. I can pick up choreography quite fast as well, before I was studying musical theatre I had never done any type of dance before and now I can do different types of ballet movements I never thought I would ever be able to do.

I really enjoy finding new different types of dance styles for example we did Cell Block Tango and the dance style was Bob Fosse, I at first found the style different and complex but then after a while I got the basics down. Whilst training my voice I feel like I am moving in the right direction I am able to sustain long notes and my range keep improving.  Working in a restaurant has taught me how to be organised and be able to multitask

third draft/final product
Musical Theatre is an inspiration to me and I want to develop the skills needed to sing, dance and act at the same time. Initially, performing was an escape and a way for me to express my feelings, however, as I got older I performed in several shows one where I sung ‘Maybe This Time’ from Cabaret, I found singing the song a great way to make myself heard.
I have taken part in many after school clubs and activities, including a summer school at RADA which really built my acting skills as we had to perform a lot of Shakespearian texts which was something I was not used to doing, I am always trying to find new ways to develop my skills through my training. I am very good at meeting deadlines and managing my time effectively which I think is an important skill. When I first watched the musical ‘Hairspray’ I was instantly intrigued because usually musical leads are petite but this show made me realise that performers can come in all different shapes and sizes. This is important to me because I don’t look like the usual performer. Before studying musical theatre I had never done any type of dance training but I can now perform ballet movements I never thought I would ever be able to do and can pick up dance choreography much more quickly.
I really enjoy discovering new dance styles. For example we performed Cell Block Tango, looking at  the Bob Fosse style and at first I found it very complex and different but soon began to enjoy the sharp and loose movements. In my vocal training I feel I am now able to sustain longer notes and my range continues to improve.  Working in a restaurant has taught me how to be organised and be able to multitask which is good when it comes to theory. I strongly believe that if you want something that you will work hard to get it, and I'm working very hard to achieve my dream of being in the theatre industry, I am very consistent with the work I do and I always give everything one hundred percent.

the courses i have applied to

  • trinity laban
  • the reason i applied for this university is because i found the course very good on the website there was a lot of information on the different thing the course offers  and at the open day the students were very diverse everyone looked different and were talented in different aspects.
  • university of west london
  • i like the fact that this course had a foundation year that you could do if you did not want to the 3 year course you could do a foundation year at that seemed appealing to me
  • royal central school of speech and drama

  • angila ruskins
  • i like the fact the university is outside of London and its away from everything i also like the fact the course is sometimes mixed with the acting and singing courses and that make the course seem more fun and enjoyable because we can learn of each other

  • Leeds college of music

  • colchester

  • i like this school because its mainly singing and they focus on singing and the voice in the first year

we were asked to make a presentation on two job roles that we would like to have in the performing industry and two universities we are looking at.
